The Kecak uses no instruments - just a circle of bare-chested men chanting "cak-cak-cak" in an interlocking rhythm while the story of the Ramayana unfolds: Rama, Sita, the demon king Rawana, and Hanoman the white monkey, who ends the show leaping through flames. The form took shape in the 1930s, built on an older trance ritual.
The open-air amphitheatre stands beside Uluwatu temple, about 70 metres above the surf. As the chanting builds, the sky turns gold and the sun drops into the ocean behind the dancers - the reason this is the best-known Kecak on the island. Seating is stone tiers, open to the sky and facing straight out to sea.
Unlike the Ubud Kecak, which runs only on certain nights, the Uluwatu show is on every day at sunset, and it's popular, so arriving early gets you the better cliff-side seats. The stage sits in temple grounds where the resident monkeys are known to snatch sunglasses and phones, so keep small items zipped away.
