While it's still dark, a traditional outrigger jukung pushes off from Lovina's black-sand beach onto the calm Bali Sea. The water on the north coast is glassy and gentle at this hour, nothing like the surf of the south. As the sky begins to lighten, dozens of small boats fan out across the bay to look for the pods.
Within about half an hour you're often near wild spinner dolphins racing the swell, leaping and rolling as they surface. They are genuinely wild, so sightings are common rather than guaranteed, though Lovina is one of the more reliable places in Bali to see them. When a pod appears the boats gather quickly, so it can feel busy on the water.
