Pick-up is around 2:00 AM, and you start hiking by torchlight at about 4:00. The trail rises to 1,717 metres through volcanic sand and loose rock - steep in places, but no climbing skill needed. It takes most people about two hours. Your guide sets a pace the whole group can hold, and there's no rush.
You reach the rim just before dawn, and the sky lights up behind Mount Abang and Mount Agung while cloud sits in the caldera below you. Lake Batur appears out of the dark. It's cold and you'll be tired, and for the first few minutes almost nobody talks - it's that kind of view.
You need reasonable fitness and closed hiking shoes - this is a real hike, not a stroll. Bring a warm jacket; the summit sits around 10°C before sunrise, so pack a warm layer to make the wait for the light more comfortable.
Your entrance ticket and return transport from Ubud are already included - nothing extra to pay for the activity itself.
We pick you up from your hotel or villa in the Ubud area at the time you choose. Your driver shares their details the day before.
Comfortable clothes and shoes suited to the activity, sunscreen, and a change of clothes if things might get wet or muddy.
Book and pay online by card or PayPal; a $10 deposit holds your date and you settle the rest at the end. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
