The east coast around Amed and the Blue Lagoon is more sheltered than Bali's surf beaches, and the water is often clear enough to see the reef from the surface. You wade in from the beach with no boat needed, and within a few strokes you are floating over coral. It is the kind of easy, glassy water that keeps snorkeling relaxed rather than daunting.
A short swim out, the reef fills with hard and soft coral and schools of small fish, and parts of the Amed coast have artificial reef structures placed to help the coral recover. Float quietly and the fish drift up around you. Bring reef-safe sunscreen if you can, since ordinary sunscreen harms the coral you have come to see.
Mask, snorkel, and fins are provided, and the calm shallows work for complete beginners. We read the day's conditions and pick the sheltered spot with the best visibility, since clarity changes with weather and tide. Bring a swimsuit, towel, and a change of clothes, float at your own pace, and dry off in the sun before the drive on.
