Penglipuran Village

Penglipuran is a Bali Aga village in the cool Bangli highlands, regularly rated among the cleanest villages in the world. It remains a living community, so the swept lanes and matching gates are people's homes, not a museum set.

The Village

A Preserved Highland Village

A single main avenue climbs gently through the village, lined with near-identical carved gates and courtyard homes and swept clean by the residents. The layout follows Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese principle of balance between people, nature, and the divine, with temples at the high end and the cemetery at the low. Walking it feels like an older, quieter Bali.

Living Culture

A Bali Aga Community

Penglipuran is a Bali Aga village, descended from Balinese who kept their customs from before the 16th-century Majapahit influence, and it still runs on its own customary law. Residents welcome visitors into family compounds to see a traditional bamboo kitchen and hear how the village funds its upkeep partly through the entrance fee. Because people live and worship here, modest dress is appreciated.

Visiting

An Easy Highland Stop

The walk is flat and easy, about an hour at a gentle pace, and a protected bamboo forest borders the village. Set in the cool highlands, mornings can feel fresh, so a light layer is handy. Penglipuran sits on the route down from a Mount Batur sunrise back toward Ubud, which makes it a natural stop on a Kintamani day.
