The Water Temple

Puri Saraswati

A short walk from the palace, Pura Taman Saraswati is Ubud's water temple - you reach the carved gates along a walkway between ponds full of lotus flowers. It honours Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and the arts, and much of the stonework was designed by the well-known Ubud artist I Gusti Nyoman Lempad. The pond forecourt is free to walk in and takes about 15 minutes to see.

Ubud Palace - Puri Saren Agung

Puri Saren Agung has stood at Ubud's main crossroads since the late 1800s and is still home to the Sukawati royal family, whose long patronage of painting and dance is a big part of why Ubud became Bali's arts town - in the 1930s they hosted foreign artists such as Walter Spies, who shaped how the outside world came to picture the island. The courtyards are open to walk through, past carved stone gates, gilded pavilions, and banyan-shaded gardens. Most evenings the front courtyard becomes an open-air stage for Legong dance, with tickets sold separately.

Stalls of textiles and handmade crafts at Ubud Art Market
The Market

Ubud Market - Pasar Seni

Directly opposite the palace, Pasar Seni - the Ubud Art Market - is packed with stalls of handwoven textiles, woodcarving, baskets, paintings, and souvenirs, much of it made in the craft villages around Ubud. Early in the morning, before the art stalls open, the same space works as a traditional market where locals buy fresh produce, fruit, and daily groceries. Take your time browsing, and buying direct supports the makers and sellers.
