The Water Garden

A Garden Built by Karangasem's Kings

Tirta Gangga was built in 1946 by the last raja of Karangasem, around a natural spring the royal family held sacred. Much of it was destroyed by the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung and later rebuilt, and it still carries a calm, regal feel. The name means "water of the Ganges", a nod to the Hindu holy river.

Fountains and Tiered Pools

Tiered fountains bubble and spill between manicured lawns, stone statues, and ornamental ponds that roll toward the hills behind. A tall tiered fountain stands at the centre, and the whole garden is green, peaceful, and easy to photograph. It is one of East Bali's quieter, less-crowded stops.

The Stepping Stones & Koi

Walk Across the Water

A row of stepping stones is set into the main pond, letting you pick your way across the water between the koi; it is the shot most people come for. The ponds are full of large, well-fed fish, and food is usually on sale to feed them, a hit with kids. Take the stones slowly, since they can be slick, and morning is the calmest, coolest time to wander.
