A sacred grove of towering nutmeg trees north of Ubud, home to hundreds of grey long-tailed macaques and a moss-covered temple.
Sangeh is a protected grove of giant pala (nutmeg) trees, many over 40 metres tall and centuries old, wrapped around Pura Bukit Sari, a 17th-century temple. Walking the shaded forest path, with light filtering through the canopy, feels a world away from the busy south.
The forest is ruled by hundreds of grey long-tailed macaques who are very much at home here. Your guide shows you how to keep belongings safe and interact respectfully - and you can pick up bananas at the entrance to feed them if you like.
The paths are flat, shaded, and easy going, so it suits all ages - allow around 45 minutes to an hour. Sangeh sits right on the route up toward Bedugul and Tanah Lot, so it slots neatly into a West Bali day.
