The Forest

Giant Nutmeg Trees & an Old Temple

Sangeh is a grove of pala (nutmeg) trees, many over 40 metres tall and several centuries old, protected for generations because the forest is considered sacred. At its heart stands Pura Bukit Sari, a 17th-century temple linked to the nearby Mengwi kingdom, its stonework softened by moss. A shaded path runs through the trees with light filtering down through the canopy.

The Resident Grey Macaques

Hundreds of grey long-tailed macaques live in and around the grove and are well used to visitors. They can be quick to grab sunglasses, hats, or loose bags, so it pays to pack those away and keep a firm hold on the rest. Bananas are sold at the entrance if you want to feed them, and watching the troop go about its day is the main draw.

An Easy West-Bali Stop

The paths are flat, shaded, and short, so the forest suits all ages and takes around 45 minutes to an hour. Mornings are cooler and the light through the trees is at its best. Sangeh sits on the route up toward Bedugul and Tanah Lot, which makes it an easy addition to a West Bali day rather than a trip on its own.
