The Water Palace

A Palace Built on Water

Taman Ujung, also called Taman Soekasada, was completed in 1921 by the last raja of Karangasem as a place to receive guests and for the royal family to relax. Wide reflecting ponds are linked by long bridges and pavilions that mix Balinese and European lines. An earthquake and the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung wrecked much of it; what stands today is a careful restoration.

The Setting

Framed by Agung and the Sea

The palace sits between the hills and the coast, so on a clear day the pools mirror Mount Agung on one side and the ocean on the other. Manicured gardens climb the slope, and a short walk up the terraces reaches a pavilion with the widest view over the whole layout.

Visiting

An Easy Stop in the East

Walking is flat around the ponds with some steps up the terraces, and shade is limited, so a hat and water help; allow around 45 minutes. Taman Ujung sits close to Tirta Gangga, and the two royal water palaces of Karangasem pair naturally on an East Bali day.
