A flight of steps leads down from the car park to the base, where the roar, the spray, and the green cliffs meet you at once. It runs all year and is fullest in the wetter months.
At the base, the river gathers into a natural pool where you can wade in and swim below the falls. The water is cold and fresh, and the spray keeps the whole gorge cool even at midday. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, and take care on the steps, which get slippery near the bottom.
From the top, viewpoints and a small terrace of cafes look straight across the falls, an easy way to take it in before or instead of the walk down. It is the classic Tegenungan photo and a good place to rest with a fresh coconut while others swim below. A small entrance fee usually applies.
