ATV riding is one of the more popular adventure activities around Ubud, and much of the route crosses everyday farmland just outside the village. The track runs through working rice paddies and dense jungle, across a shallow river you ride straight through, and into a hand-carved tunnel lit only by your headlamp. Expect plenty of mud along the way.
The quads are automatic, so there are no gears to manage - twist the throttle to go, squeeze to brake. You start with a safety briefing and a short practice loop before the trail, and a guide rides with the group the whole way. No licence is required, and you can take a quad on your own or ride tandem with a partner on one machine.
From Ubud it is a half-day out. Helmet, gloves, boots, and knee guards are provided; you just bring clothes you do not mind ruining and a change for after. Showers, lockers, and a place to eat are at the base. Minimum age is 12 to ride solo, sessions run morning and afternoon, and rides go ahead in light rain, which only adds to the mud.
