You're strapped into a harness, seated on a wooden swing anchored to a tree at the edge of the gorge, and then pushed. For a few seconds there is genuinely nothing beneath you but jungle canopy and the river far below. It lasts about a minute and people usually want to go straight back on.
Most spots offer several swings at different heights - a low, gentle one for a first go, and a high one that flings you well out over the valley. There are usually bird's-nest platforms, hanging beds, and flower pods too, all set up for the photo. Take the low swing first; you'll want the high one afterwards.
Every rider wears a full safety harness clipped to a separate line - the swing is secure and staff are trained. Wear something that photographs well and won't fly up (long dresses are popular for a reason, but bring shorts underneath). Staff will take photos on your phone for free, and go slow if you ask.
