Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

Climb an active volcano in the dark and stand on the summit as the sun breaks over Mount Agung. Two hours up, breakfast cooked in volcanic steam at the top, and a view that makes every step worth it.

The Experience

The Climb

Two Hours Up, in the Dark

Pick-up is around 2:00 AM, and you start hiking by torchlight at about 4:00. The trail rises 1,717 metres through volcanic sand and loose rock - steep in places, but no climbing skill needed. It takes most people two hours. Your guide sets a pace the whole group can hold, and there's no rush.

The Summit

Sunrise Above the Clouds

You reach the rim just before dawn, and then the sky lights up behind Mount Abang and Mount Agung while the clouds sit in the caldera below you. Lake Batur appears out of the dark. It's cold, you'll be tired, and almost nobody talks for the first few minutes - it's that kind of view.

Good to Know

Fitness, Warmth & Volcanic Breakfast

You need reasonable fitness and closed hiking shoes - this is a real hike, not a stroll. Bring a warm jacket; the summit sits around 10°C before sunrise. At the top your guide cooks eggs and banana sandwiches using steam vents from the volcano itself, which never stops being a good story to tell.
