Wide stone stairways climb through the complex, past split gates and rows of tiered meru shrines that stand like dark pagodas against the sky. Each courtyard opens onto another, higher up the slope. Take your time; the scale sinks in as you move up level by level, with the valley falling away below.
The whole complex faces sacred Mount Agung, Bali's highest and holiest volcano, which rises directly behind the upper shrines. On a clear day the mountain is as memorable as the temple itself, but the weather here shifts fast, so the peak is often wrapped in cloud until it lifts.
