The Temple

A 16th-Century Temple in the Sea

Tanah Lot means "land in the sea", which is close to literal - the temple stands on a rock offshore, reachable on foot only when the tide is out. It is thought to date from the 16th century and is linked to Dang Hyang Nirartha, the travelling priest credited with founding a series of sea temples around Bali, each built within sight of the next. The temple itself is open only to Balinese Hindus for prayer; everyone else takes it in from the shore and the paths above.

The Setting

Tides, a Spring, and the Open Ocean

At low tide you can cross the sand to the foot of the rock, where a freshwater spring surfaces beneath the temple and, by local belief, sea snakes watch over it. As the tide returns the rock is cut off again and the swell breaks against its base. The low cliffs on either side carry smaller shrines and lookout points, with the Indian Ocean running to the horizon beyond.

Visiting

Sunset, and the Crowds That Come With It

Most visitors arrive for the last hour of light, when the temple stands in silhouette against the sky - which is also when it is busiest, with the paths and the market stalls leading down to it at their fullest. Coming a little earlier leaves time to walk the cliffs first. Tanah Lot sits in Tabanan on Bali's west side, roughly an hour and a half from Ubud, so it usually rounds off a day spent in the western highlands rather than a trip on its own.
