The Cliff Temple

A Sea Temple on the Edge

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a sea temple thought to date back around a thousand years, and one of the six directional temples the Balinese believe guard the island. It stands on the very edge of the headland, roughly 70 metres above the ocean, with waves breaking far below and open sea beyond. The inner temple is reserved for prayer; visitors take it in from the surrounding paths.

The Widest Views in the South

A path traces the top of the headland with the ocean stretching out on one side, giving the broadest coastal view in southern Bali, best as the afternoon light turns golden. Mind the unfenced edges and the wind. The grounds are home to a troop of monkeys that are quick to grab sunglasses, hats, and phones, so keep hold of loose items.

Visiting

Sunset and the Kecak Dance

Most people time their visit for late afternoon and pair it with the Kecak fire dance staged on the cliff nearby as the sun goes down - a circle of chanting performers telling a Ramayana story against the open ocean. A sarong is required to enter the temple and is provided at the gate. Ask us about timing if you'd like to stay for the show.
