Overview

The Cave

Through the Demon's Mouth

The heart of the site is the cave, its entrance cut into a large menacing face that you step straight through. Inside, a narrow T-shaped passage leads to meditation niches carved into the rock and weathered shrines lit by oil lamps. Thought to date from around the 9th to 11th century, it is one of the oldest sanctuaries near Ubud, cool and dim after the heat outside.

Ancient Fountains & Courtyards

Just outside the cave lie stone bathing pools, fed by fountains held by carved figures and excavated only in the 1950s. Around them stretch shaded courtyards scattered with statues and fragments of old shrines. Hindu and Buddhist relics sit side by side here, a trace of the period when both faiths shared the same ground in Bali.

The Ravine

Jungle Paths to Hidden Shrines

Behind the main courtyard, mossy steps drop into a green ravine past streams, rice fields, and weathered carvings half-swallowed by the jungle. It stays shaded and quiet, pleasant even at midday, and shows why the place has drawn pilgrims and visitors for centuries. Walk the loop slowly rather than turning back at the cave.
