A 9th-century cave sanctuary with a demon-carved entrance, just outside Ubud.
Goa Gajah, the "Elephant Cave," is one of Ubud's oldest and most mysterious sites, dating to around the 9th century. Its cave mouth is carved into a monstrous face you step straight through; inside are ancient meditation niches, while outside lie bathing pools, stone fountains, and jungle paths that lead down to hidden shrines.
The mix of Hindu and Buddhist relics here hints at Bali's layered past. Wandering the shaded courtyards and down the mossy steps into the ravine, past streams and weathered carvings, it's easy to see why this quiet sanctuary has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years.
