Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang Temple - Gates of Heaven

Pura Lempuyang is one of Bali's oldest and highest temples, in the far east of the island. Its split gate frames sacred Mount Agung, and the well-known "gates of heaven" photo means a long queue unless you arrive early.

Overview

Lempuyang, Bali
The Gate

The Split Gate and Mount Agung

The split gate (candi bentar) at the temple entrance is one of Bali's most photographed sights, its two halves framing sacred Mount Agung in the distance. On a clear morning the mountain rises straight through the gap. The much-shared "reflection" is not water but a mirror held under a phone, and there's usually a long line for the shot - we handle the ticket, the sarong, and your place in the queue.

One of Bali's Great Directional Temples

Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of the island's oldest and highest temples, part of the ring of directional sanctuaries that guard Bali. Set high on the mountainside among cool air and forest, it is a working place of worship far beyond the viral photo. The gate at the entrance is only the first of several that climb toward the summit shrine, a long stair climb of well over a thousand steps for those going to the top.

Arrive Early, Beat the Queue

We arrive at first light, when the air is cool, the line is short, and Agung is most likely to be clear of cloud. By mid-morning the wait for the gate photo can run to an hour or more, so an early start makes the difference. It is a high, breezy spot reached by a short shuttle up the last stretch, so bring a light layer and hope for a clear sky.
