Pandawa sits below the limestone cliffs of the Bukit peninsula in South Bali. Once hard to reach, it opens up now through a cut carved into the rock and lined with statues of the Pandawa brothers from the Mahabharata.
Pandawa was long known as "Secret Beach" because a limestone ridge hid it from the road. The access route was cut and carved straight through that ridge, and its walls now hold six large statues of the Pandawa, the five brothers of the Mahabharata epic and their mother Kunti. The passage frames the sea as you come down the last stretch to the sand.
The cut opens onto a wide strip of white sand backed by the cliffs, with water that stays calmer than the surf beaches further along the Bukit. There is room to spread out, and the gentle shore break makes it an easy place to swim. Seaweed farming still goes on at the quieter end, a reminder of what the beach did before tourism found it.
Loungers and kayaks rent right on the sand, and the calm conditions make paddling and swimming straightforward. It is a laid-back stretch of coast for a few unhurried hours by the water, less hectic than the south's busier beaches. Bring a swimsuit and towel; a small entrance and parking fee usually applies.
