The Temple

An 11th-Century Village Temple

Pura Puseh Batuan dates to around 1022 AD and serves as the puseh, or temple of origin, for the village. Like most Balinese temples it is arranged in three courtyards rising toward the most sacred inner space, with tiered meru shrines and split gates marking the way. Batuan's long artistic reputation shows in how carefully every surface is worked.

The Carvings

Carved Paras Stone Up Close

The temple is worked in paras, a soft grey volcanic tuff that carves finely and then hardens once exposed to the air. Guardian figures, floral scrollwork, and scenes from the Hindu epics cover the gates and walls, and because paras weathers in Bali's climate, sections are periodically recarved by local stone artists. It reads as an open-air record of Balinese temple craft.

Visiting

A Cool, Quiet Stop

Batuan sits on the main road between Ubud and the craft villages of Celuk, Mas, and Batubulan, so the temple slots easily into a culture day. It stays cool, shaded, and rarely crowded, and a visit takes around 45 minutes. A sarong is required to enter and we arrange one for you; since it is an active temple, modest dress is appreciated.
