Taman Ayun was the state temple of the Mengwi kingdom, its rows of tiered meru towers set on an island inside a wide moat. It sits in Mengwi on the way west, an easy stop on a West Bali day.
Taman Ayun was founded in 1634 as the main state temple of the Mengwi kingdom, the royal family's link to its gods and ancestors. The name means "beautiful garden", and the grounds were laid out to match, with shrines, courtyards, and water arranged along a single axis. Today it forms part of Bali's UNESCO-listed cultural landscape tied to the traditional subak irrigation system.
The inner courtyard is lined with rows of meru, multi-tiered shrines with thatched black roofs stacked in odd numbers, each tier honouring a mountain, a deity, or an ancestor of the royal house. The whole sanctuary sits on an island ringed by a wide moat, so the temple seems to float on the water, entered through a split candi bentar gate and framed by manicured lawns.
Walking is flat and easy on paved paths around the outside of the moat; the inner courtyard is reserved for worship, so you take in the meru from the walkways and across the water. Morning is cooler and quieter, and a sarong is required and provided. Taman Ayun sits in Mengwi about 45 minutes from Ubud, and pairs naturally with Tanah Lot later the same day.
