A valley of stepped rice fields north of Ubud, carved over generations and still watered by the subak system. Walk the paths between the paddies, then stop at the coffee plantation in the same area for a tasting that includes kopi luwak.
The Tegalalang terraces fall away in wide green steps that follow the curve of the hillside, carved and farmed over many generations. Narrow paths and small bamboo bridges run between the paddies, where farmers still work the same slopes their families have tended for centuries. Come early, when the morning mist lifts off the valley and the light is soft.
The fields are still fed by subak, Bali's communal irrigation system, in continuous use for over a thousand years and recognised by UNESCO. Water is shared field to field through hand-cut channels, guided by the temples and the farming calendar. It is what makes Tegalalang a living farm rather than a viewpoint: everything you see was planted, flooded, and harvested by the village around you.
Beside the fields, a working plantation grows coffee, cacao, and spices. You can walk the shaded grounds, see how beans are roasted by hand, and sit down to a tasting flight of local brews and herbal teas, including kopi luwak, the civet coffee this area is known for. The tasting flight is free; buying a bag of beans afterwards is optional, not expected. A small entrance or donation may apply at some of the terrace viewpoints, and there is an optional swing set at the top of the rice terrace.
