Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan fill part of an old volcanic caldera in the highlands above Munduk, separated by a narrow strip of forest. Tamblingan is the smaller and quieter of the two, edged by old lakeside temples and traditional dugout canoes. From the ridge road above, the pair line up in a single view.
This is highland Bali, well above the coast, so the air is cooler and greener - closer to cloud forest than beach. Densely wooded ridges ring the basin, and the scale of it only really lands once you're looking down from the rim. It makes a calm, unhurried counterpoint to the busier coastal stops.
The viewpoint sits right off the road as you climb toward Munduk, so it takes only a short stop rather than a detour. Come early and the view is at its clearest; as the day warms, mist rolls in off the water and softens everything to grey-green. Bring a light layer, and expect a small fee to pull in and park.
