In the early morning Pasar Ubud is a local produce market - stalls piled with tropical fruit, vegetables, spices, and the flowers Balinese women weave into the daily canang offerings. It has been the town's main trading spot for generations, and dawn is when you see it as locals actually use it, before the day's visitors arrive.
Later in the day the produce clears and the handicraft stalls take over - batik and woven textiles, woodcarvings, rattan bags and baskets, beads, and souvenirs of every kind. It sits right in the centre of town, across from the Ubud Palace, so it folds easily into a walk around Ubud and is a good spot to pick up a gift.
Bargaining is part of how the market works, so start friendly, take your time, and enjoy the back-and-forth. Most stalls deal in cash, so bring small notes. More than shopping, it's a lively slice of everyday Ubud with something to catch your eye down every narrow aisle, and it costs nothing to wander even if you buy nothing.
