Bali is a volcanic island, and its peaks shape both the landscape and the culture. Towering over the east is Mount Agung, the highest and most sacred volcano, believed to be the home of the gods and the point Balinese orient their temples toward.
Further north-west, Mount Batur is lower and gentler - an active volcano sitting inside a vast caldera beside a crater lake. Its pre-dawn hike is one of Bali's signature experiences.
The Batur sunrise trek is achievable for most reasonably fit walkers, rewarding you with the sun rising over the caldera and, on clear days, Agung in the distance.
